Kayn is a Director, based in our Bryanston offices and is a subject matter expert of international business transactions. Kayn has over 28 years of experience in cross border tax, exchange control, international trade and customs and excise matters. Having started his career as a South African Revenue Service official where he worked in refunds, excise, exports, tariffs, imports and thereafter as an auditor and senior investigator. He moved into the freight forwarding and clearing environment where he gained valuable on-the-ground experience with the clearing of imported and exported goods where he prepared customs clearance documentation. He has also worked for a shipping line where he co-ordinated the physical shipping of goods with the cross border tax and related compliance obligations on behalf of clients. He joined Arthur Andersen in the Tax and Legal team in 1998 and has been consulting ever since. He was head-hunted by Deloitte Tax and after 6 years moved in the Strategy and Innovation Team in Deloitte Consulting where he ran various programmes in the supply chain field as well as project management. He was also recruited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young where he was a subject matter professional in the Taxation Departments, after being re-recruited by Deloitte. In January 2018, Kayn incorporated Anthony Norman and through his extensive network of tax, legal and accounting professionals has an extensive network of highly regarded specialists that he can resource on projects to ensure that the highest level of professionalism is provided to clients on all business aspects, not only in the international trade community. He is extensively experienced in terms on the World Customs Organisation’s (“WCO”) SAFE Framework of Standards and tax and customs administration processes from a WCO perspective and has consulted to several international customs administrations, including the Abu Dhabi Customs Administration, the Kenya Revenue Authority. Kayn also developed the tax (direct and Indirect) business processes for Lesotho Revenue Authority and the Swaziland Revenue Authority. Kayn’s expertise in taxation disputes is extensive having dealt with over 100 disputes on various matters over his career. He is currently delivering projects for clients in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Maryke Engelbrecht studied law at the University of Pretoria and obtained her LLB Degree with multiple distinctions. She qualified as an Attorney and Notary Public after completion of her articles at Weavind & Weavind Inc. in Pretoria. During her articles she gained experience in personal injury matters, motor vehicle accident matters, civil law, family law and trusts and estates. Maryke then joined Cogent Law, a UK based law firm operating out of Pretoria, where she gained invaluable experience in motor vehicle accident matters. From there Maryke joined Dyason Inc. as an Associate and mainly dealt with personal injury matters and claims against the Road Accident Fund. A change in direction took Maryke to PricewaterhouseCoopers where she joined the Tax and Legal Department after which she joined Deloitte’s Taxation services department at Deloitte in Woodmead. Maryke is able to advise clients on various cross border and international trade aspects including tariff classification, valuation and transfer pricing adjustments, ad valorem excise and diesel refund matters, health promotion levy (sugar tax) and carbon taxes. She can also assist clients with registrations and reviews (health checks) to ensure compliance with the Customs and Excise Act. Maryke also has experience in Due-Diligence reviews and Audit of Tax Risk reviews. Her responsibilities include researching, consulting and advising clients on various taxation legislative matters, as well as the drafting of technical opinions.
Cynara is a Charted Accountant,
having completed her Honours Degree in accounting sciences in 2014. She is a
seasoned Tax Practitioner who has run her own accounting firm since then. She
holds a professional affiliation with the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants.
As such, she has
extensive experience across the board of all of the taxation for businesses
across the myriad of industries.
Cynara has amassed 27
years solid financial experience, having worked as a junior right through to
directorship roles during this period. She has also worked in every facet of
any traditional company’s finance department.
This exposure allows her to bring insights into
the cross pollination of skills and operational solutions to ensure that
companies always adopt best business practices for efficient and effective
management.
Lesley joined the Anthony Norman & Associates team in December 2019 and is responsible for attending to freight matters including managing clearing and forwarding agents and accounting firms in relation to the importation and exportation of goods. Lesley has a wealth of experience in the freight industry having worked for African Shipping where she was responsible to liaising with international freight agents and negotiating freight rates or outbound and inbound shipments. Thereafter, Lesley was recruited by other freight companies including Freightspeed which was the forwarding division of Renfreight Forwarding and Clearing as well as WACO Logistics and A. Hardtrodt, all of which are highly regarded in the freight and shipping industries. Lesley is currently responsible for managing the imports and export departments clients with an annual throughput in excess of R1bn and includes preparing review files and import VAT reconciliations as supporting documents for the VAT201s.
